The Grand Forks Region prides itself on having a quality of life unlike any other. Quality education and healthcare, affordable housing, safe streets and an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities make Grand Forks a wonderful place to grow a business and a great place to call home.
When April, 2007 came around, the Grand Cities Art Fest was awarded the Event of the Year by the Governor’s Travel and Tourism Awards. The Grand Cities Art Fest is a premier event for North Dakota, attracting visitors and vendors regionally, nationally and internationally.
People thrive best where they feel safe and connected, where they are supported and enriched. Quality schools, excellent medical care, ample recreation possibilities, community involvement, and neighborhood support continue to make Grand Forks and East Grand Forks very hospitable.
In June 2007, Expansion Management (a leading business site location and facility magazine) ranked the Grand Forks MSA a “Five Star Community” in its annual Quality of Life Quotient rankings. Expansion Management evaluates all 329 metropolitan statistical areas according to nearly 50 statistical areas. Each of the top 15 percent (50 cities) is recognized as a “Five Star Community.”
Valuing Safety and Security
The state’s crime rate (per 100,000 population) was the lowest in the nation in 2006. Specifically, North Dakota ranked the lowest (50th) in violent crimes, murders, robberies, and aggravated assaults.
For the sixth year in a row, North Dakota was ranked “America’s Safest State” by the Morgan Quitno Press. North Dakota was also rated the 6th “Healthiest State,” which includes access to health care providers, affordability of health care and the overall general health of the population, and 12th in the “Most Livable State” category.
In Grand Forks, specifically, crime remains low, with violent offenses accounting for only 28 percent of the national average.
Access to Government and Citizen Involvement
Grand Forks, and North Dakota as a whole, has accessible, informal, hands-on elected and appointed officials. Our state and local government leaders recognize the importance of business growth and sound economic development, and that creates a positive attitude toward business among our leadership.
Healthcare
The Grand Forks area is a hub for high-quality healthcare, advanced medical training and research. In fact, North Dakota and Minnesota were ranked among the top ten healthiest states, according to a report released by the United Health Foundation. Many facilities in the area provide a full range of primary, secondary and clinical services.

Altru Health System
Altru offers care from numerous locations in Grand Forks as well as various branch clinics and has many employees, physicians and volunteers that work as a team for the benefit of each and every patient that visits. Altru is a community-owned, nonprofit integrated health system that provides a full range of medical treatments and services.
Aurora Medical Park
Aurora Medical Park is new to the Greater Grand Forks area. Currently it is home to a number of independent medical practices with physicians and therapists who offer primary care and specialty medical services, in addition to secondary services. Preliminary plans for the Aurora Hospital are aiming for the fall of 2009 as the target completion date.
MeritCare
MeritCare's mission is to improve the health and quality of life of the people they serve. MeritCare has both home care services and a clinic located in East Grand Forks. The University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences
The University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences prides itself in teaching their students to become caring, intelligent and high quality Physicians of the future who act in the best interest of patient care. Not only does great education take place here, but state of the art research is also conducted by the university.
